“Manchester United can confirm that first-team coach Eric Ramsay will depart the club to join Major League Soccer team Minnesota United as head coach… His responsibilities will be shared across the rest of the coaching team for the remainder of the season.” United said while announcing Ramsay’s departure which is set to take place next week.

Ramsay was born in Shrewsbury and began his coaching career at Loughborough University. In 2019, the Welshman became the youngest UK coach to earn his UEFA Pro Licence and has since worked with several top clubs in England.

The 32-year-old has held coaching roles at Swansea City, Shrewsbury Town and lastly worked for Chelsea before joining Manchester United. He also served as the assistant head coach of the Wales national team in 2023.

Ramsay is looking forward to take over as Minnesota United head coach and praised the club for their strong football culture, fanatic fanbase and brilliant infrastructure.

Minnesota have been without a permanent manager since October 2023 when they parted ways with Adrian Heath. They were lead by interim manager Cameron Knowles who will be stepping down for Ramsay to take over.

Eric Ramsay Is The Right Man To Lead Minnesota

Minnesota’s chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad believes that Eric Ramsay is the right man to lead the team due to the experience he has with top players and coaches. Some of the biggest names in the football world Ramsay has coached include Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, just to mention a few.

Taking his experience with the top stars to the MLS, the Welshman will be joining the list of British coaches such as Wayne Rooney, Phil Neville Dean Smith and Casey Stoney, who have coached in the MLS. Smith is the current head coach at Charlotte FC while Stoney is leading Charlotte FC.

The MLS Season Kicks Off

The 2024 MLS season kicked off last Wednesday with reigning League Cup champions Inter Miami CF hosting Real Salt Lake in a standalone match at Chase Stadium. Inter Miami, who have stars such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, won the match 2-0.

More games were played over the weekend, with Eric Ramsay’s new club Minnesota United securing a 2-1 victory over Austin. Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Los Angeles Galaxy, with Messi scoring the equalizer in stoppage time.
