Nausea and general are part of the reasons why Emma Raducanu lost Australian Open 2024.

The 21-year-old admitted that she felt so weak with episodes of nausea and at some point threw up. This sickly feeling made her lose in the second round of the major slam.

Raducanu remained off-court for over nine months recovering from injuries on her foot and wrists.

Why Emma Raducanu Lost Australian Open 2024

The nauseous feeling led to Raducanu suffering a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 defeat to Wang Yafan in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

After winning a challenging second set to level the match, she left the court but visibly struggled with illness upon returning for the demanding deciding set.

Despite battling fiercely after losing her serve in the opening game of the third set, Raducanu couldn’t capitalize on any of the seven break points she had in Wang’s initial two service games.

She ultimately succumbed to defeat but in a well-played match. This was the second tournament she played after the year’s opener in Auckland which was her first tournament in eight months.

Following her loss in Melbourne, Raducanu candidly shared her feelings and detailed the challenges she faced in the third set.

“Now I feel a little bit better. I had some time. During the match, I’d say, like, third set I was 30-Love up serving. Then all of a sudden just felt so sick, just really like weak and nauseous,” she narrated.

“Throughout the third set I think everyone could see it was a bit of a battle. Like physically, body-wise, I felt fine. It was more I was throwing up in my mouth. Then after the match, it came out. Now I’m okay. Yeah, I’ll get over it. It just sucks with the timing.”

How Did Emma Raducanu React to Losing at the Australian Open 2024?

Although she lost in this match, Raducanu was pretty radiant about it all. She was happy with how her body felt and reacted when she was in action despite the sickly feeling from a stomach bug she had.

Raducanu expressed optimism for the upcoming tournaments. She is hopeful of performing better citing that her body is in better shape now.

Many people believed she would not show up at the Australian Open but she did after all.

“I think that to be here is a bonus, a good starting point I would say because I started putting good practice sessions together with Nick, we’re doing good work off the court. As I said before, I’m more focused on level and the practice days, trying to win the day rather than focusing more on win or loss,” she noted.

The Brit is still looking at playing a full season in 2024.

“The encouraging thing is, even though I played two back-to-back three-setters in Auckland, a three-setter today, body-wise, strength-wise, I didn’t come up with any random niggles. That just happened throughout the match. It was just me throwing up. That’s fine. That’s not normal, but it’s like a one-off.”

Does Emma Raducanu Have a Coach?

Her new coach is Nick Cavaday. She hired him in late 2023 to help her throughout the 2024 WTA season.

She picked Cavaday as she prepares to make a comeback and win more Grand Slams. Cavaday will be her sixth coach in a span of two years. Raducanu was previously coached by Andrew Richardson, Nigel Sears, Sebastian Sachs, Torben Beltz and Russian Dmitry Tursonov.

There were concerns about her tennis career due to the absence of a coach but she was not worried at all.

Raducanu is positive that with Cavaday she will win another Grand Slam, possibly Wimbledon which is a long held dream.

Her injuries are well-healed now and she continues to train hard and get back to the top.
