Career
Robert Whittaker was introduced to combat sports by his father when he was still young. The future UFC star was just seven years old when his father enrolled him and his brother in a Gojo-ryu karate school.
In 2008, Whittaker joined Australia’s Xtreme Fighting Championships and made his debut the following year against Chris Tallowin. He claimed victory in the first round via TKO.
Whittaker then continued with his career at Cage Fighting Championships where he recorded six victories from 2009 to 2011. On 30 October 2011, Whittaker suffered his first loss against Hoon Kim in Legend Fighting Championships.
Following an impressive performance at The Ultimate Fighter, where he became the first winner of the Ultimate Fighter, Whittaker was offered a contract by the UFC. On 25 May 2013, he defeated Colton Smith via TKO in the third round. After a few fights, he moved to the middleweight division in 2014 and continued to impress.
In December 2017, Whittaker became the Middleweight Champion after Georges St-Pierre vacated the title. In October 2019, he lost the belt to Israel Adesanya and failed to reclaim it in a rematch in February 2022. The Australian has since fought twice, defeating Marvin Vettori before losing to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 290.
