On Wednesday night, Real Madrid secured a 5-3 victory over Atletico Madrid during the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid game. An own goal by Stefan Savic and a strike by Brahim Diaz late in extra time helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat their city rivals in an exhilarating Spanish Super Cup semi-final match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Mario Hermoso had put Atletico Madrid in front six minutes into the match with a header before Antonio Rudiger levelled for Real Madrid in the same way. Ferland Mendy then put the Los Blancos ahead with a brilliant goal but it was cancelled by Antoine Griezmann before half time.

Rudiger netted an own goal with 12 minutes left to play but Dani Carvajal scored a short while later to force the game into extra time.

The rivalry between the two teams, the comeback and the stakes make last night’s game arguably the best match of the Spanish season.

Real Madrid face either FC Barcelona or Osasuna in Sunday’s final. Barca and Osasuna meet on Thursday night and if the Catalans win, it will mean a second El Clasico final in a row. Xavi Hernandez’s side secured a 3-1 win in last year’s final.

Atletico Madrid are the only team to beat Real Madrid this season across all competitions, with Diego Simeone’s side earning a 3-1 win in September. Atletico almost picked from where they left when Samuel Lino fired a superb curling strike which would have gone in if it were not for Kepa Arrizabalaga’s stunning save. However, there was nothing that the 6 ft 2 in goalie could do when Antoine Griezmann’s corner into the box was headed in by defender Mario Hermoso.

Having faced a blow just six minutes into the match, Real Madrid looked to settle into the contest afterwards and eventually found themselves back at it when Rudiger powered a header past Jan Oblak after meeting Luka Modric’s corner.

With the momentum on their side now, it didn’t take long before Carlo Ancelotti’s side were in front. Dani Carvajal’s pass into the box was met by Ferland Mendy, who brilliantly directed the ball into the net in the 29th minute.

Despite Real looking more dangerous of the two sides as the match approached half time, Griezmann showed a lovely individual effort before beating Kepa from the edge of the box. The Frenchman made history with the strike as he passed Luis Aragones to become Atletico Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer with 174 goals.

Things cooled down a bit in the second half of the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid game in Riyadh as fans had to wait until the 78th minute before seeing another goal. A calamitous attempted clearance from Kepa led to the ball hitting the back of Rudiger’s head before ending up in the net.

When it seemed it was all over for the Los Blancos, Dani Carvajal levelled the scores following some last-ditch defending from Atletico. This forced the game into extra time where Real took the lead late on, thanks to Stefan Savic’s own goal.

Atletico pushed everyone in front in attempt to equalize, including Oblak, but that only led to extra punishment as Diaz finished off a counter- attack into an empty net.

The Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid game played last night is the first of three meetings between the two teams in under a month. After the 5-3 loss in Riyadh in the Spanish Super Cup, Diego Simeone and his team will be aiming for a revenge when they face Carlo Ancelotti’s side next week in the Copa del Rey, and in early February in La Liga.
