Carlos Akapo is a professional footballer who plays as a right-back for the San Jose Earthquakes in the Major League Soccer [MLS] in the USA and represents Equatorial Guinea internationally.

The 30-year-old was born in Spain but has Equatorial Guinea heritage on his father’s side and Spanish on his mother’s. His football journey began when he was playing for local youth teams like Elche CF and Kelme CF, making his debut for Elcher Ilicitano in the Segunda Division B of Spanish football.

In the following years, Akapo was on loan stints where he gained valuable experience in various Spanish clubs. He played for CD Denia, Novelda CF and CF La Nucia where he improved his skills as a promising young defender.

His career took a turn when he signed for Atletico Levante, quickly established himself as a key player and his performance caught the attention of several bigger clubs, made a jump to La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football with SD Huesca.

Despite stiff competition with Huesca,  he managed to secure a regular starting position for the club and helped them avoid relegation in his first season.

He was called up by the Equatorial Guinea national team and since then, he has been a key player for the team, where he featured in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Akapo recently signed with the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. He has adapted to the American game and is a regular starter for the club, helping them improve defensively and climb the ranks in the Western Conference.

The player also represented Spain at the U17 and U19 levels before switching allegiance to Equatorial Guinea.

Carlos Akapo Personal Life

The player was born in Elche, Spain on March 12 1993 by an Equatoguinean father and a Spanish mother. He started playing football at a young age and demonstrated talent and dedication from an early age, leading to his entry into professional youth teams.

Navigating dual cultural identities both in Spain and Equatoguinean heritage was not easy but he embraced his background.

Though there was stiff competition in the Spanish Leagues, he was able to break into professional football and persevered through loan spells where he proved his worth to secure a place in La Liga and beyond. Initially, he represented Spain at youth levels before choosing Equatorial Guinea, a decision influenced by his father’s heritage and desire to contribute to his ancestral nation.
