Larry Holmes began his boxing career at the age of 18 and compiled an amateur record of 19-3 before turning professional in 1973. He gained the attention of the boxing world in March 1978 after defeating Earnie Shavers, who was a prominent name in boxing at that time.
Following his victory over Earnie, Holmes was given a chance to face Ken Norton in June for the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Holmes won the title after defeating Norton via split decision. He continued to impress the boxing world with his knockouts in the ring afterwards.
On 2 October 1980, Larry Holmes defeated Muhammad Ali via knockout to become the first ever fighter to stop the legend. He went undefeated in his first 48 fights until 1985 when he lost to Michael Spinks via unanimous decision. He was defeated again by Spinks in a rematch the following year.
