John Morrison began his wrestling journey training at the Supreme Pro Wrestling school in California. In 2002, he joined WWE and was assigned to the developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he continued to improve his skills.
On 1 March 2004, Morrison made his debut on the main roster as a heel. He initially used the ring name Johnny Blaze, but it changed to Johnny Spade the following week and Johnny Nitro three weeks after his debut. He would go on to use different ring names over the course of his career.
During his early years at WWE, Morrison wrestled as part of the stable MNM. The stable wrestled at OVW for around one year then was promoted to SmackDown where they continued to wrestle for some time.

After MNM’s split, Morrison embarked on a singles career and went on to win two Intercontinental Championships and the ECW World Championship.
Morrison then formed a tag team with The Miz and they worked together for some time before splitting up. Morrison won his third Intercontinental Championship afterwards.
