Junior Dos Santos trained in capoeira throughout his teenage years and began taking martial arts seriously at the age of 21. He started to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Yuri Carlton and managed to win a few jiu-jitsu tournaments a short while later.

Dos Santos turned professional in 2006 at the age of 22 and fought in promotions such as Extreme Fighting Championship, Mo Team League, Demo Fight and Minotauro Fights. The young fighter won six of hi first seven fights as a pro.

On 25 October 2008, two years after turning professional, Dos Santos made his UFC debut at UFC 90. It took him just one minute and 20 seconds to knockout Fabricio Werdum, earning himself a “Knockout of the Year” award.

Dos Santos then went on a winning streak that included takedowns of Mirko Cro Cop, Gabriel Gonzalez, and Roy Nelson. The Brazilian fighter then defeated Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez to earn the UFC Heavyweight Championship afterwards.
