Career

Andrei Arlovski developed interest in martial arts from a young age and wanted to join the police academy as a teenager. He trained in Sambo while he started lifting weights to practice for a potential law enforcement career. His skills got him to the World Sambo Championship where he took second place, and was also the runner-up at the Sambo World Cup.

Not long after, Arlovski became the first Master of Sports and then International Master of Sports. He began training in other mixed martial arts shortly afterwards and soon began his professional MMA career.

Arlovski was 20 years old when he made his pro MMA debut at the Mix Fight M-1 in St Petersburg, Russia. He lost his debut match to Viacheslav Datsik.

Arlovski returned to M-1 Global in 2000 at the European Championships and took the heavyweight crown. Following his impressive performance, he was offered a contract at UFC by Dana White. He defeated Aaron Brink via submission in his first fight at UFC 28.
