When Luke Thomas was left unmarked at the far post in the third minute, Sheffield United got the opening half-chance of the game. However, two Newcastle defenders immediately charged down Thomas’ attempt.

In the 12th minute, Harvey Barnes was injured and had to be replaced by Gordon as the visitors started to gain momentum in the game. This prompted Magpies head coach Howe to make a substitution.

In the 14th minute, Thomas had a similar opportunity, but he mishit his volley from a James McAtee cross, giving Newcastle another let-off at Bramall Lane.

However, in the 21st minute, Longstaff was able to head a cross from Gordon into the goal to give the Magpies the lead.

Although the goal was controversial since the ball hit Gordon’s hand, VAR approved of the official’s first judgment, and Newcastle took the lead against the odds.

However, in the 31st minute, Burn headed a corner from Kieran Trippier into the far post to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Wes Foderingham, the goalkeeper for Sheffield United, made a wise save to save Wilson’s attempt in the next time, but the Magpies made it 3-0 in the 35th minute when Botman headed a free kick from Trippier into the bottom corner.

When the home team started to crumble, Foderingham had to dive to stop Wilson in the 39th minute. Then, in the 43rd minute, the two players squared up once more, with the same result.

Sheffield United was fortunate to trail by just three goals at the interval thanks to another excellent save from Foderingham, who turned away a deflected Gordon shot in first-half stoppage time.

In the 56th minute, Wilson headed a cross from Trippier into the goal from close range to make it 4-0 for Newcastle.

Almiron was denied a fifth goal for the Magpies on the hour by the offside flag, but the visitors scored a little over a minute later when Gordon curled a long shot into the bottom corner.

In the 68th minute, Almiron contributed to Newcastle’s six-goal advantage by launching a shot into the bottom corner after being let free by Guimaraes.

The Magpies scored their seventh goal in the 74th minute thanks to Guimaraes, who turned and struck from close range after Longstaff’s attempt was deflected in his favor.

The 87th minute saw Isak dribble into the home team’s area and neatly score Newcastle’s ninth goal to end a wretched afternoon for the Blades.

The opposition will now turn their focus to the EFL Cup, playing Manchester City on Wednesday in the third round of the tournament.
