Career

Dimitri Payet began his football journey on the French island of Reunion where he was born. He played for local clubs such as Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierroise. In 1999, he moved to metropolitan France and joined Le Havre youth set-up.

Payet had a difficult four-year period at Le Havre. He was accused by the management of having a difficult character and displaying a lack of motivation. As a result, he was expelled from the team and he had to work in a supermarket to fund his return to the French Island of Reunion.

After returning home, Payet spent a season with the youth team of AS Excelsior. Due to his impressive performance, he was promoted to the senior team where his rise to fame began. He spent two years playing for the club in the Reunion Premier League.

In 2005, Payet joined Nantes and was initially placed in the club’s reserve team. He established himself as one of the best players in the reserve team and was called up to the senior team in December.

After a successful 2006-07 season, Payet signed a four-year deal with AS Saint-Etienne. It was with the club that he got the opportunity to play European football for the first team.

In the summer of 2011, Payet was signed by Ligue 1 defending champions Lille. The gifted playmaker spent two years at the club and then continued with his journey at Olympique de Marseille.

In June 2015, Payet moved to play abroad for the first time, joining West Ham United. He had a great first season with the Premier League club, being named West Ham United Hammer of the Year.
