Career
Diego Godin began his football journey playing for the youth teams of Estudiantes El Colla and Defensor. At the age of 17, he moved to Cerro where he started his professional career.
Godin showed good performances playing for Cerro and caught the attention of Nacional, who signed him in 2006. Due to his maturity and professionalism, Godin became captain of Nacional a short while after his arrival. However, he would only spend one season with the Primera Division powerhouse.
Diego Godin joined Villareal in the summer of 2007 and signed a five year deal. He quickly became a key player for the Spanish side, helping them get their best finish (second) in La Liga in his debut season.
On 4 August 2010, Atletico Madrid signed Godin from Villareal on a five-year deal. He won his first trophy with the Colchoneros, the UEFA Super Cup, in his debut which was against Inter Milan.

While at Atletico Madrid, Godin established himself as one of the best defenders in the world. He helped the Spanish side win three UEFA Super Cups, two UEFA Europa Leagues, a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.
Godin joined Inter Milan in the summer of 2019 as a free agent. After a season with the Italian side, he continued with his career at Cagliari, Atletico Mineiro and Velez Sarsfield. He announced his retirement from professional football on 27 July 2023.
At international level, Diego Godin represented the Uruguay national team from 2005 to 2022. During that period, he earned a total of 161 caps and helped the team win Copa America and two China Cups.
