- Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has finally completed his return to the Serie A
- The Blues wanted a permanent sale for Lukaku but only got a season-long loan deal
- The Belgian rejected a move to Saudi Arabia, and a move to Juventus failed
Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku has officially made a season-long move to Roma, marking the end of a dramatic summer transfer window for the forward.
Throughout the summer, Chelsea actively sought a permanent transfer for Lukaku. However, despite their efforts, securing a permanent departure for the player proved to be a challenging endeavor. Lukaku had declined offers from Saudi Arabia, and Inter Milan, a former club of his, withdrew from the race to secure his signature.
Juventus had also expressed interest in signing Lukaku permanently. However, their proposal came with a condition: they were willing to make the transfer permanent only if they could part ways with Dusan Vlahovic. Furthermore, Juventus had even offered Vlahovic as part of a deal with Chelsea, but the Blues promptly turned down the offer.
Given the circumstances, Chelsea ultimately decided to send Romelu Lukaku on another loan deal to Roma. The Serie A side emerged as the leading candidate to secure the services of the Belgian striker, and the deal has now been finalized.
Romelu Lukaku will reunite with his former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, in Rome. Speaking about his move to Roma, Lukaku expressed his excitement, saying, “The welcome I’ve received from this club and its fans has excited me and given me even more motivation to give my all for my new team.”

Lukaku further added, “As an opponent, I felt the atmosphere of the Stadio Olimpico and felt the warmth of the Romanisti. It’s nice to know I’m a part of it today. I recently got the opportunity to speak with the owners, and I was impressed by their ambition. Now we must work, be humble, and grow game by game. For my part, I can’t wait to be available to my teammates both on and off the pitch.”
It’s worth noting that the deal between Roma and Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku’s transfer does not include an option or obligation for Roma to make the move permanent. This means that Lukaku’s future beyond this season remains uncertain, and it will depend on the performances and developments during his loan spell with Roma.
Romelu Lukaku’s move to Roma is set to be an intriguing chapter in his career, as he looks to make a significant impact in Serie A and contribute to the success of his new team under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. The loan arrangement allows him to experience a new footballing adventure and showcase his skills in Italy’s top flight. Football fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Lukaku’s progress and performances in the Italian league during the 2023/24 season.
