AS Monaco has officially acquired Kemba Walker, marking the four-time NBA All-Star’s venture into European basketball for the first time. The team announced the signing on Friday, sealing a one-year contract with the experienced point guard.

Walker, aged 33, has had a tumultuous journey in the NBA, primarily due to significant knee issues he faced after inking a maximum contract with the Boston Celtics in the 2019 offseason. These persistent problems led to him moving between teams, and during the last season, he appeared in merely nine games for the Dallas Mavericks. However, the Mavericks decided to waive him in January before his salary could become guaranteed.

In his prime, Kemba Walker was a prominent figure in the NBA, earning four consecutive All-Star selections while playing for the Charlotte Hornets and the Celtics from 2017 to 2020. Throughout his illustrious career, he has showcased his scoring prowess and playmaking abilities, boasting an average of 19.3 points and 5.3 assists across 750 NBA games. Walker initially entered the league as a first-round pick in 2011 after being instrumental in guiding UConn to a national title.

Monaco, a renowned basketball club, achieved a significant milestone in its history by claiming its first French pro league title in the previous season. They exhibited remarkable form by sweeping Metropolitans 92 and Victor Wembanyama in the finals. Moreover, the team achieved an impressive third-place finish in the highly competitive EuroLeague.

For Kemba Walker, the move to AS Monaco presents a new chapter in his basketball career. While the transition to European basketball may come with its challenges, it also offers an opportunity for the veteran point guard to prove his worth and make a substantial impact on the international stage. Monaco’s recent success in domestic and European competitions sets a promising stage for Walker to contribute his skills and experience to the team’s pursuit of continued excellence.

As Walker dons the colours of AS Monaco, fans and basketball enthusiasts alike will be eagerly anticipating his performances and how he adapts to the different styles of play in European basketball. The one-year deal provides both Walker and the team with a chance to gauge the fit and explore the potential for a more extended collaboration if all parties find mutual success and satisfaction.
