He was born to African parents who migrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa to France in search of a better living and secure a future for their four children.
He has an elder brother by the name Bosso and their youngest Daniel, who grew up a few miles apart from Nicolas Pepe who is also a renowned football player.

His next move was at Lyon on a one-year loan at a fee of $2.2 million with an option of permanency for $8.8 million plus an additional $273,415 in bonuses and 20% of any profit made from a transfer from the club.
At Lyon, he was very successful in helping the team get back to the champions league, thus creating interest from other major clubs Lyon held him permanently as was agreed in the contract.
