  • Football managers always run the risk of job uncertainty
  • Their sacking is always on the radar
  • The highest amount paid was $32 million

Is there any sport as spontaneous as football when it comes to sacking coaches? Well, the downside of this unpredictability is the reason why the narrative of the highest paid football managers after sacking exists.

While no team picks a manager only to sack them in the end, their exit [managers] is always unceremonious and damaging.  They say this uncertainty comes with the job. Yet, here are great men with brilliant coaching minds booted out by their teams when they least expected it but made a killing out of it.

THOMAS TUCHEL (CHELSEA)

Thomas Tuchel net worth nearly doubled after a hefty sendoff package following his unceremonious sacking by Chelsea in September 2022. The Todd Boehly-owned club sacked Tuchel following a 1-0 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb. The Blues had to part with $14.9 million for his pay.

Add that to his existing $20 million net worth; Tuchel is rightfully among the highest paid football managers after sacking. The sack came after a securing $9 million pay in 2021 after leading the team to its second UEFA Champions League title. Before then, he was only earning $8 million.

JOSE MOURINHO (CHELSEA)

Jose Mourinho received $22 million (£18 million) payout in 2007 from Chelsea after failing to deliver a Premier League championship or a European trophy. He had changed the team and turned them into perennial winners, but he wasn’t allowed to see the slightest decline in performance for even one season. It was a record payout at the time.

In 2018, Manchester United sacked Mourinho despite winning the club two trophies. His exit bagged him $25.3 million as an exit package. He wasn’t as lucky. Tottenham would take him through the same ordeal in 2021 and he took home $19.8 million.

Tottenham has a reputation for long-term contracts and Mauricio Pochettino seemed unmovable by it all when he was the manager. He bagged a five-year contract with the club in 2018 but it came to a sudden stop only a year and a half later. The club had to pay him $15.2 million making him one of the highest paid football managers after sacking.

ANTONIO CONTE (CHELSEA)

Antonio Conte made history by becoming one of the highest paid football managers when Chelsea sacked him on July 2018. He walked home with $32.6 million and broke Mourinho’s massive payoffs. Conte only served for one season and led the team to clinch the FA Cup but he still left the team.

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS (CHELSEA)

Villas-Boas cost Chelsea a lot of money to get from Porto in 2011, but ironically, Stamford Bridge had to spend a fortune to see him out of their quarters. It set back Chelsea $14.4 million. The expectation was that he would replace Jose Mourinho. Although he was in charge for less than a year, Chelsea still managed to win the Champions League under his tenure.

LAURENT BLANC (PSG)

PSG has had many managers since 2011 but none compares to Laurent Blanc’s brilliance. Under him, PSG won three Ligue 1 championships but still got fired in 2017 for failing to make the club as popular in Europe. His payout was $20.5 million.
