- Tusker lead the standings with a point above leaders Gor
- Wazito are fighting relegation and are in a must win situation
- Gor Mahia play Ulinzi in Nairobi
Tusker FC skipper Humphrey Mieno has rallied his charges ahead of Sunday afternoon’s fixture against Wazito FC, a crucial tie in their hunt for the FKF Premier League title. The brewers sit top of the standings with 65 points, one above second placed Gor Mahia.
With fate in their hands, the brewers only need to win their remaining matches to successfully defend their title.
They come up against a Muhorioni side fighting to survive automatic relegation, and they are also a point above second from bottom Mathare United and have to win to keep their hopoes alive.
Mieno says this will make the duel more intense and hard fought, but remains confident his team has what it takes to earn maximum points.
“It will be a very tricky and difficult match for us because they also want to survive relegation. But as a team we are ready. We have trained well and prepared efficiently for this game. We are psyched up and we know what is at stake,” Mieno said.
He added; “I would just like to urge my teammates to remain calm and mentally focused. There will be so much pressure on this game, but if we can maintain our calm and focus, we will get a good result.”
Brewers won the first leg
The brewers beat Wazito 2-0 when they played in the first leg, Lawrence Luvanda and Eric Otieno netting the goals that earned the brewers victory.
With the title at stake, coach Robert Matano and his charges will leave nothing to chance in trying to secure maximum points.
“It is a tough match definitely but we are also a tough team. We will give our best to get maximum points because our ambition is to defend our title,” the tactician noted.
The team will look to clinch maximum points and ensure fate remains in their hands, with second placed Gor Mahia playing Ulinzi Stars in Nairobi.
The brewers are hoping Tusker drop points in Muhoroni and they pick maximum points for them to switch places on the log.
“We are facing a difficult match definitely but we are up to the task. We have tried to look at ways in which we can do better especially in scoring and we will be a good fit come Sunday,” Gor Mahia’s coach Jonathan McKinstr said.
Fight for survival also intense
While the fight for the title is intense on top, the fight for survival is also as intense.
Wazito, who lost their last match away to Bandari FC in Mombasa are on 23 points, one above Mathare United, who have lost five in a row.
Mathare will face Kakamega Homeboyz in Nairobi and a win for them, coupled with defeat for Wazito in Muhoroni will see them swap spaces into the play-off zone.
With three matches to go, City Stars who are in 15th already secured the last automatic survival position and the two are now fighting for the play-off slot.
