Lionel Messi Signs Off
PSG had released a statement prior to the Clermont game thanking Lionel Messi for his contribution in the past two years.
“After two seasons in the French capital, Leo Messi’s adventure with Paris St Germain will come to an end at the conclusion of the 2022–23 campaign.” PSG said in a statement.
The Parisians president Nasser al-Khelaifi thanked Messi for playing at Parc des Princes and winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles. .
“I would like to thank Leo Messi for his two seasons in Paris. To see a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner in the Rouge & Bleu and at Parc des Princes, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and inspiring our younger players has been a pleasure. His contribution to Paris Saint-Germain and Ligue 1 cannot be understated and we wish Leo and his family all the best for the future.” Reuters quotes Nasser al-Khelaifi.
The 2022 World Cup winner leaves PSG having played his part as they won a record 11th domestic league title. He has scored 32 goals and recorded 30 assists since his arrival from FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021. Messi registered 16 assists this season, only two behind Di Maria who has more assists in a single Ligue 1 season.
PSG fans have been unhappy with Messi, especially in his last year of contract. This could be due to the fact that the Argentine has not been able to have a big impact in the club, could not help them go past the last 16 in the Champions League.
Sergio Ramos signed off from his time with the Parisians with a goal but Messi did not. The Argentine, who could be returning to Barca this summer, missed several chances to add to his 32 goals in 75 games for PSG.
