Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has left the tennis world stunned after announcing her return to the sport.
Wozniacki previously announced her retirement from tennis in 2020 and has been out of action for three years now. The Danish superstar, who is now 32, ended her career so as to start a family and raise awareness about rheumatoid, a condition she suffers from.

“Three years ago, having achieved almost everything I’d ever set out to do, I walked away from the professional tour. I wanted to start a family, and I needed a break. I had no idea how long that break would last.” Caroline Wozniacki told Vogue, as per Eurosport.
Wozniacki added that the idea of making a return to tennis came last year when her dad visited her from Florida
“But then, one day late last year, I found myself setting up a couple of sessions on the court. And when my dad visited me in Florida, I realized I needed advice. I hit for 20, 30 minutes – I’m not sure how long, but at one point I looked at him and said, ‘I feel like I’m hitting it better than I ever have. Am I making that up?’ He said I wasn’t making that up. And that’s when I knew I had to get back out there.” Eurosport quotes the 32-year-old Danish star.
Wozniacki won the 2018 Australian Open, among 30 other WTA Tour-level titles. She also spent a total of 71 weeks on top of the rankings.
Wozniacki now intends to play at the Canadian Open in Montreal in August before participating in the US Open. She would be looking forward to win her second Grand Slam at the US Open, having reached the major’s final in 2009 and 2014.
The US Open said that they have already handed Caroline Wozniacki a wildcard for the event following her return to tennis. After the US Open, Wozniacki will be eyeing the 2024 Australian Open and the Paris Olympics. She told Vogue that she believes she can win the US Open and the Australian Open, which is why she is returning to tennis.
Wozniacki made her professional tennis debut eight days after turning 15. She was an unranked wildcard at an event in Cincinnati in July 2005. The Dane got the attention of the tennis world during the first stage of her tennis career when she beat Simona Halep to win the Australian Open in 2018.

Wozniacki is following in the footsteps of her close friend Serena Williams who gave birth in 2017 and returned to tennis. Serena reacted to Caroline Wozniacki return to tennis on Instagram by writing: “Literally can’t wait. So glad I don’t have to be silent about this anymore.”
