Medvedev struggled throughout the match, particularly with his serve. He won just 46% of points on his second serve and his opponent made the most of this to break twice in the deciding set. Medvedev did retrieve the breaks but not in the third set.
The Brazilian did keep his composure with the red dirt flying in the air to record one of the biggest upsets at a Grand Slam this year.
Speaking after the win, Seyboth said his win over Medvedev was a dream come true.
“I’ve watched Daniil play for my entire junior career. I always dreamed about playing these kinds of players on these kinds of courts. In my best dreams, I’ve beaten them. It’s a dream come true. I wanted to get the angles, using my forehand against his, and it worked pretty well. It was tough. I started cramping in the second set, and I couldn’t serve the way I wanted to. I stayed strong mentally, and I played my best tennis.” Eurosport quotes the 23-year-old Brazilian.
Seyboth Wild will face either Quentin Halys or Guido Pella in the second round as he aims to move forward.
How The Game Unfolded
Daniil Medvedev arrived at Roland Garros fresh from winning his first-ever clay court title in Rome and ready to do so at the French Open.
Medvedev broke Seyboth in the first game but the Brazilian quickly settled down and started showing off his forehand with a couple of brilliant winners. He had amazing drop shots and and won his serve to love in the third game before breaking Medvedev.
Seyboth then began firing down serve after serve, forcing a tie-break in the first set. He ended up winning the first set. The second set was as interesting as the first set with neither player giving an inch. In the end, it was Medvedev who won to force a decider.
At first, the Russian was in full control and it seemed it was going his way. He was 4-2 up after the first six games when he found another break and went on to serve it out. Seyboth sealed the fourth set to force a decider, which he won.
