  • Chelsea is in the process of recruiting a new first-team manager after sacking Graham Potter
  • The Blues are currently led by Frank Lampard who was appointed on an interim basis
  • The club is closing in on an agreement with former Tottenham and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea are nearing an agreement with Mauricio Pochettino as they seek a long-term replacement for Graham Potter. Talks are underway between the Blues and the 51-year-old former Tottenham and Paris St Germain manager, but a formal agreement has yet to be finalized.

Since Potter’s unexpected departure last month, Frank Lampard has been serving as interim coach. However, the team has only managed one victory in the eight matches under his leadership during his second stint at the helm. This disappointing run culminated in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge over the weekend.

With three Premier League games remaining against Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle, Chelsea are aiming to have their new manager in place once the current campaign concludes. Despite significant investment in the playing squad, the Blues have endured a deeply disappointing season, sitting in 11th place with only 11 wins in 35 league matches.

Initially, Julian Nagelsmann was the frontrunner to replace Potter, but Lampard, who had a successful playing career at Chelsea, was brought in to manage the team until the end of the season. However, Chelsea has continued to struggle under Lampard’s guidance, including a six-game losing streak in all competitions.

Mauricio Pochettino, the former Argentine international, had a successful five-year tenure at Tottenham, leading them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019. He has been without a managerial role since his departure from Paris St Germain last summer.

If the expected appointment of Pochettino by Chelsea comes to fruition, he will inherit a squad that has been assembled at great expense but has underperformed. Furthermore, the team will not be competing in European competitions next season.
