R-Truth began his wrestling journey in the Pro Wrestling Federation (PWF) as a manager in 1997. He spent three years travelling and training with Manny Fernandez before eventually making his debut in 1999 as K-Krush. He later wrestled for Xtreme Pro Wrestling (XPW) as K. Malik Shabaz.
WWF (now known as WWE) signed R-Truth for the first time in 1999 offering him a two-year contract. He used the ring name K-Kwik from 1998 to 2002 and formed a team with “Road Dogg” Jesse James. Before WWE released R-Truth, he had won the WWF Hardcore Championship twice.

The American signed a deal with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) after his release. During his time with Jeff Jarrett‘s promotion, R-Truth achieved a lot of success. He headlined numerous pay-per-view (PPV) events, won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, the NWA World Tag Team Championship and TNA World Tag Team Championship.
