Jermell and his identical twin brother began boxing when they started following their father into the gym. Young Jermell soon became a force to reckon with on the amateur boxing scene, winning a bronze medal at the 2005 Junior Olympics. By the time Jermell ended his amateur boxing career, he had recorded 56 wins and 8 losses.
Career
Nicknamed Iron man, Jermell Charlo turned professional at the age of 17. In his first match, he defeated Corey Sommerville in a four-round battle.
Jermell passed the biggest challenge of his career when he eased past Gabriel Rosado in a 10-round unanimous decision win. On 21 May 2016, Jermell defeated John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) in a bout for the vacant WBC light middleweight title. He defended the title three times before losing it to Tony Harrison on 22 December 2018. Tony remains to be the only boxer who has defeated Jermell.
Jermell won the WBC light middleweight again on 21 December 2019 in his rematch with Tony Harrison. He has since retained the title.
