On 21 May 2016, Jermell defeated John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) in a bout for the vacant WBC light middleweight title. He defended the title three times before losing it to Tony Harrison on 22 December 2018. Tony remains to be the only boxer who has defeated Jermell.

Jermell won the WBC light middleweight again on 21 December 2019 in his rematch with Tony Harrison. He has since retained the title.
