Tusker FC stormed into the second round of the FKF Cup after thrashing on-league side Berlin FC 7-0 at the Kasarani Annex. Stewart Omondi came off the bench to score thrice with Eric Otieno adding two more while Shami Kibwana and Shaphan Oyugi had one each.

It was a massive confidence boost for Tusker who have struggled at the start of the year and the goal-scoring fest now puts them at a good spot mentally as they get back to Premier League action.

“It was a really good performance and most of the goals we scored were from things we have worked for in training. In terms of motivation for the players it goes a long way to boost their morale because scoring seven goals increases your confidence,” added the coach.

After moments of resistance, where the brewers were restrained to a few shots from distance from Eric Zakayo and Lawrence Luvanda, they finally found their scoring boots after 28 minutes.

Zakayo took a strike at goal from distance which the keeper saved, but Shaphan was at hand to nod the rebound home. Two minutes later they took a 2-0 lead when Daniel Sakari flicked Otieno through, the latter running into the box and tapping the ball beyond the keeper.

The only effort at goal from Berlin in the opening half was an Ibrahim Mao freekick which sailed inches over the bar.

In the second half, with Berlin tired off and their fighting spirit slowly dying off, Tusker killed them off. They made it 3-0 when Otieno tapped home from close range after the keeper saved Stewart’s shot.

With a three-goal cushion, Tusker were now playing for fun and passing the ball around the pack with ease. Coach Matano decided to give some game time to the recovering midfield duo of Humphrey Mieno and Rodgers Ouma, trying to improve their fitness ahead of Wednesday’s league match at home against Bandari.

The introduction of the due ended in a total dominance by the Brewers with Stewart coming close with a shot from the right which was saved. He finally got his goal in the 83rd minute when he converted from the penalty spot after a Berlin defender handled inside the box.

The goal opened the way for more goals. Off a counter, Humphrey Mieno put Ouma through on goal and the latter unselfishly squared to Stewart to score his second. The substitute then completed his hattrick and scored Tusker’s sixth when he tapped home from the rebound after the keeper had spilled Eric Mmata’s shot.

Off a text book counter, Shami Mwinyi who had come in for the final five minutes, the brewers completed their seven-star performance with the forward sliding the ball beyond the keeper from a counter.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards also progressed to the next round after edging out third tier side Zetech University 2-0 at the Kasarani Stadium. Division Two side Rainbow also earned their spot after beating Migori United on post-match penalties.
