- Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Crystal Palace after a 12-match winless run
- He leaves alongside three members of his coaching staff – Said Aigoun, Kristian Wilson and Osian Roberts.
Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Crystal Palace after a 12-match winless run. The sacking does not come as a surprise since Palace have not won any match in the English Premier League since the start of this year.
Their last Premier League fixture ended in a 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Wednesday. This was their third defeat in a row, and they had gone three consecutive games (against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool) without a shot on target before facing Brighton. The last time Crystal Palace won a match was on New Year’s Eve 2022 when they beat Bournemouth.
Crystal Palace are 12th on the table but are just three points above Bournemouth, who are 18th on the standings. No Premier League team has won fewer points this year that Crystal Palace. They have taken just five points from a possible 33.
Patrick Vieira Sacked
According to chairman Steve Parish, the result in recent months have placed Crystal Palace in a position where change is necessary. The club needs to retain their Premier League status and that’s why they need a new manager to take control.
“It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made. Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.” Steve Parish said, as per BBC Sports.
Goalscoring has been the main issue for the Eagles as they have not scored any goal in their last four fixtures. They have not found the back of the net twice in a match since December 2022.
Patrick Vieira leaves Crystal Palace alongside three members of his coaching staff – Said Aigoun, Kristian Wilson and Osian Roberts. The Frenchman leaves after a run of 12 games without a win in all competitions. The disappointing run includes FA Cup elimination in the third round by Premier League bottom side Southampton.
Patrick Vieira’s Impact Has Been Significant
Even though Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Crystal Palace, his impact at the club remains significant, according to chairman Steve Parish. The former Arsenal man joined Palace before the start of the 2021-2 season and he led the club to a 12th-placed finish. He also led Palace to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final, something the club appreciates.
“Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues. He led the team to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final and respectable 12th-placed finish last season playing some exciting football, which was a challenging and crucial campaign for the club given the changes we made to the squad prior to his arrival.” BBC Sports quotes Steve Parish.
Vieira earned praise for Palace’ attacking style last season. However, things have not been the same for Palace on the attack since the start of the 2022-23 season.
