Fred began his professional football career at Brazilian club Internacional after playing for the club’s youth system. He won the Campeonato Gaucho twice (in 2012 and 2013) with Internacional before securing a transfer to Europe. Overall, the Brazilian talent made 55 appearances and found the back of the net eight times during his time with Internacional.

On 26 June 2013, Shakhtar Donetsk signed Fred for 15 million Euros. The midfielder scored two goals on his competitive debut as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Chornomorets Odesa 3-1.

Fred spent five years with the Ukrainian club, helping them win the Ukrainian Premier League three times: 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2017-18. He also helped the team win the Ukrainian Super Cup (2013, 2015) and Ukrainian Cup (2017-18).

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) felt that the ban was lenient and so they appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). An agreement was reached between WADA and CAS preventing Fred from playing until July 2017.
