FC Barcelona suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat away at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos on Sunday night while facing relegation-based Almeria.
Xavi Hernandez’s side blew away a huge chance to extend their lead at the top of La Liga, with second-placed Real Madrid drawing on Saturday. It’s FC Barcelona’s second big loss in the past few days, following their Europa League exit on Thursday at the hands of Carabao Cup winners Manchester United.
Barcelona had not lost any of their last 18 matches before facing Manchester United last week. Speaking after the 1-0 loss on Sunday, Xavi Hernandez acknowledged that his side wasted a golden opportunity to increase their lead at top of La Liga to ten points.
“I’m very angry because I think we made the worst game of the season by far, mainly in the first half. We were not good and wasted a great opportunity in a match we could not afford to lose after what happened to Real Madrid. It was a golden opportunity today and it ended with a really bad day for us. No excuses, it was the worst showing of our side in the entire season.” Xavi Hernandez said after the game, as per BBC Sports.

Almeira’s only goal of the match was scored by El Bilal Toure; a superb strike in the first half. The home team are now out of the relegation zone with 25 points. Almeira could have won the match by three goals but Leo Baptistao and Rodrigo Ely failed to convert their chances.
Meanwhile, Celta Vigo thrashed Valladolid 3-0 at Estadio de Balaidos. Haris Seferovic scored the opener for the home side in the 17th minute before Gabriel Veiga doubled the lead in the 32nd minute.
Valladolid had a goal ruled out in the 60th minute before Gabriel Veiga sealed the win for Celta Vigo four minutes later by scoring his second of the night. Rojo Martin’s side were forced to finish the match without substitute Selim Amallah, who was shown a red card in the 84th minute.

Celta Vigo are now 13th on the La Liga table with 27 points whereas Valladolid are just one point out of the relegation zone.
In another match, Athletic Bilbao suffered a 3-2 defeat at home. Girona’s Aleix Garcia opened the scoring for the visitors after just four minutes of play. Oscar de Marcos’ own goal 15 minutes later left Athletic Bilbao with a real mountain to climb.
Yuri Berchiche would pull one back for the home team but Girona once again had a two goal advantage before the end of the first half, thanks to Mikel Vesga’s own goal. Raul Garcia scored Athletic Bilbao’s second goal in the 89th minute.
The last game of Sunday La Liga fixtures was between Sevilla and Osasuna, and it ended in a 3-2 win for the visitors.
