Liverpool came from behind to defeat Leicester City 2-1 in their last Premier League game of 2022, thanks to Wout Faes’ own goals.

Leicester City had taken the lead just four minutes into the game. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall curved the ball past Liverpool’s defence before beating goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

There was end-to-end action as both teams created several chances before Wout Faes gave Liverpool the equalizer in the 38th minute.

Faes stuck a boot to try and defend Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross when the ball looped over goalkeeper Danny ward into the back of the net.

The Belgian defender could have actually done better to present the first goal. He would have left the ball since the goalkeeper shouted at him to do so. However, he ended up sending the ball into his own goalpost.

Things even got worse for Wout Faes barely ten minutes later as he gave Liverpool the lead by scoring another own goal. What a nightmare for the defender!

Wout Faes fired the ball into his own net after the chip from Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez bounced back off the post. The goal was plain unfortunate at Wout’s momentum as he was rushing to prevent the ball from going into his own net.

Unlike the first own goal, there was little that Faes could have done to prevent an own goal in this case. The ball actually bounced back off the post into his path.

Liverpool could have increased their lead in the second half, but they missed a couple of good chances. Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez all missed clear chances.

Mo Salah was only left with the goalkeeper to beat when his shot went wide of the post. Just like he has recently been doing, Darwin Nunez failed to convert decent chances.

Leicester City also had opportunities to equalize in the second half, but efforts from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Harvey Barnes proved to be futile.

In the end, Wout Faes’ two own goals sealed the win for Liverpool at King Power Stadium. Faes is the fourth player to score two own goals in one Premier League match.

His predecessors were Jamie Carragher (1999, Liverpool vs Manchester United), Michael Proctor (20003, Sunderland vs Charlton) and most recently, Jonathan Walters (2013, Stoke City vs Chelsea).

Liverpool are currently sixth on the Premier League table, with just two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and one point behind fifth-placed Manchester United.

Leicester City, on the other hand, are 13th on the table with 17 points. Brendan Rodgers’ side have suffered ten defeats in the last 17 Premier League games.

According to Brendan Rodgers, his side loses the ball at the wrong moments.

“But we lose balls at the wrong moments, and we were too open at times. We have to take the result momentum but have to play better in our next match against Brentford.” Rodgers said after the 2-1 loss to Liverpool, as per ESPN
