The 30-year-old goalkeeper just won the FIFA World Cup trophy with Argentina on Sunday. On top of that, he went home with the Golden Glove award after dropping a masterclass against France in the finals.

Martinez made an unbelievable save in the last seconds of added time in extra time to deny France the win. At the penalty shootout, he saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty to put pressure on the remaining France penalty takers.

In the end, it was Argentina who won the penalty shootouts, thanks to Emiliano Martinez’s heroic performance.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper had earlier saved two penalties against Holland to help Argentina proceed to the semi-finals.

Emiliano Martinez is now a World Cup champion, but his early life and football journey have not been easy. He faced challenges, especially at Arsenal, where he had to plead with Mikel Arteta via text, asking to leave.

This was after he was not given any guarantee that he would remain Arsenal’s number-one goalkeeper for the 2020-21 season.

Prior to that, he had spent some time on loan with several teams as he struggled to get playing time with the Gunners.

Early Life

Emiliano Martinez biography has it that he was born on September 2, 1992, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The Argentine international grew up in his birth city, where he began playing football.

He does not have a good memory of his childhood since he grew up in lack. Martinez’s family were not financially stable, and in his case, it has been about overcoming obstacles.

Speaking during an interview with the Guardian, Emi Martinez described his family struggles and how he joined Arsenal.

“It was not a poor, poor background, but my family struggled a lot in financial terms. I arrived back in Argentina and, a week after, I had the offer from Arsenal. I saw my brother and mum cry, saying: ‘Please don’t go.’ But I had also seen my dad crying late at night because he could not pay the bills. So I had to be brave at the time, because I said ‘yes’ for them.” He told the Guardian.

Emi Martinez made his first appearance for Arsenal on September 26, 2012, against Coventry City. Arsenal won the match 6-1. He made his second appearance several days later as Arsenal defeated Reading 7-5.

The Argentine international was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in late 2013 and remained at the club until the end of the 2012-13 season.

He returned to Arsenal and again went on loan to another team, Rotherham United. Emi Martinez joined Wolves on loan at the start of the 2015-16 season.

Success With Argentina
