Al Ahly have won the Egyptian Super Cup after beating arch rivals Zamalek SC 2-0 in a match played at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, Dubai.
This was the third time that the Super Cup was being played in Dubai, with Ahly winning it again for the third time there. This was their 12th in the club’s history and their first since 2019 after losing the last two titles to Zamalek and Tala’ea El Geish.
Goals late in either half from Bruno Savio and Karim Fouad handed Ahly the victory and a massive confidence boost.
Ahly started faster off the blocks and were rewarded in the 39th minute when Bruno intercepted a back pass before turning his marker inside out and striking the net with a low shot.
Zamalek determined in second half
In the second half, Zamalek were determined to draw back level and they made changes with Mostafa Shalby coming in for Zakaria Al-Wardi.
The White Knights had chances but Ahmed Sayed ‘Zizo’ and Omar Gaber saw their chances go begging. Zizo shot over from close range before striking the upright with another chance.
Shikabala and Amr El-Sisi came on for Jaziri and Rouka as they continued searching for goals.
They were however pegged back with Ahly putting the game to bed in the 92nd minute, Fouad tapping home from a Taher Mohamed cross.
Ahly are seeking to return back to the top of the Egyptian football pyramid after struggling for the last two seasons, which has seen them change coaches three times over just the last four months.
They have picked back to back wins in their first two matches of the new season, beating Aswan and Ismaily with identical 1-0 margins.
“I am happy with the win in the Super Cup I think it will give us more confidence for the season. We have some players returning from injury and I believe we will be stronger as the season goes on,” said new coach Koller.
