- Lewis Hamilton crashed into Fernando Alonso at Les Combes
- Max Verstappen won the race which he is closely contenting for with Charles Leclerc
- Alonso called Hamilton an idiot
After crashing out of the Belgium Grand Prix on the opening lap and hitting Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton posted a humbling message to his fans.
Before posting the message, Hamilton said he is grateful to be still alive. He, however, admitted that he was at fault.
Hamilton’s car was thrown into the air and sustained enough damage to cause the British driver to withdraw from the race. He had a verbal exchange with Alonso who called him an ‘idiot’.
But, Hamilton chose not to respond to him and chose silence above all else. Instead, he reached out to his fans.
“I want to firstly apologise to my fans especially those that came out to support me today. Almost 30 years racing and the feeling left from a mistake cuts just as deep as the first. My team, who works so hard, deserved more today.

“We are not where we want to be but will not stop pushing until we get to where we know we belong. Great drive by @georgerussell63 today, well done mate. Everybody get home safe. Sometimes this is life, it happens but it’s not how we fall, it’s how we get up. Will be working as hard as I can to come back stronger,” he stated.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won the race following Hamilton and Alonso’s collision at Les Combes while attempting a move.
Hamilton says Alonso was in his blind zone and didn’t give him enough space during the opening lap, and the footage shows as much. In this case, the buck stops with him and is sorry about it.
When asked if he would speak to Alonso about his comments, Hamilton answered in a frank manner. He said he wouldn’t because he knows how he [Alonso] feels about him, the crash notwithstanding.
As a result of penalties, title contenders Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and teammate Esteban Ocon started from the rear of the pack at Spa. Alonso started the race in third place on the grid, with Hamilton starting slightly behind him in fourth.

The 2005 and 2006 world champion brought his Alpine home in fifth place despite the drama that occurred on the first lap, which is tied for his best finish of the 2022 season yet.
After the race, Alonso was happy to let the incident go and attributed his comments on Hamilton’s driving abilities to anger. He was also happy to let go of the event itself.
Alonso stated that he was astonished but was glad Hamilton took responsibility for it. He described this as sweet.
Alonso said it was a lap-one occurrence, and there was nothing more to say about it. He went on to say that the stewards didn’t say anything because such things happen, especially at that corner.
He defended his utterances to anger and frustration at the moment, adding that a crash is inevitable when starting on the first or second row.
