- Jelena Djokovic, wife of tennis player Novak Djokovic, has fired off a series of scathing tweets at Racquet Magazine
- Jelena questioned if Racquet Magazine was a legitimate, worldwide tennis magazine
- It remains to be seen if Djokovic will play in the US Open
Jelena Djokovic, the wife of tennis player Novak Djokovic, has fired off a series of scathing tweets at Racquet Magazine for criticizing her husband for joining the Canadian Open.
That’s despite his inability to travel to Canada due to his lack of a COVID-19 vaccination. In an effort to defuse the situation, the publication advised Jelena that her husband should skip the US Open.
Djokovic withdrew from Monday’s start of the Montreal event on Thursday. And in no time at all, Racquet Magazine took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the matter.
“Dunno why this guy keeps entering tournaments hoping they’ll change their rules for him,” the publication tweeted.
Despite the post’s popularity, Jelena responded negatively, asking if Racquet Magazine was a legitimate, worldwide tennis magazine. She tagged ATP Tour in her tweet and followed up with four emojis of a shocked expression.

Jelena received a reply from Racquet, which expressed the publication’s wish that her husband might reconsider his opinion on vaccinations so that he could attend the US Open.
“We’d love to see your husband play in New York and the rest of the tennis world. Hopefully he’ll decide he can follow the rules,” the magazine responded.
However, Jelena was only concerned with the initial tweet, in which she reminded the publication that competition submission is handled automatically. As the chat continued, she typed that her husband’s admission into the tournament was guaranteed under the rules of tennis and his ranking.
She boldly asked the magazine to explain the rationale behind their tweet. And then Racquet Magazine tweeted, doubling down on their condemnation of the 21-time Grand Slam victor.
It questioned if Djokovic would withdraw from City Open and the US Open now that he knows he doesn’t want to follow the rules. Further, Racquet asked if he would wait until the last minute like he did in Montreal Open and withdraw.
Not wanting to ruin Jelena’s night, the publication further tweeted that it would be nice if he would take his position by withdrawing from those events now.

The magazine said that instead of having the entire tennis world speak about him, its better he opts out now and not wait for the eleventh hour and walks away.
But an unbowed Jelena couldn’t stop. She told Racquet Magazine that being a tennis champion is, without a doubt, his primary goal. She adds that his resolve to stay away from vaccination still holds water with a strong resolve.
She urged the magazine to consider shifting its attention in the next weeks to tennis. The exchange comes amid a raging debate on his participation in the US Open.
Djokovic has three US Open titles to his name. Already, a Serbian caucus wrote to Joe Biden asking him to allow Djokovic to play at the US Open. But, it looks like he will not play in New York unless he softens his stand on vaccination.
