Who are the Africa’s top scorers in the Champions League?

8. Vincent Aboubakar

Vincent Aboubakar is a Cameroonian striker who plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Professional League and the Cameroon national team.

Former African champion and Golden Boot winner at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Aboubakar has scored goals wherever he has gone.

He’s won league titles in France, Portugal, and Turkey, constantly shined in the Champions League.

During his time with FC Porto and Besiktas, the 30-year-old has scored 14 UCL goals.

Ivory Coast forward Doumbia, perhaps the least well-known person on this list, is a past Africa Cup of Nations champion (he won it in 2015). Like Aboubakar, he has proven he can compete against Europe’s best defenders.

After making his UCL debut with CSKA Moscow, he scored with FC Basel and Sporting Lisbon, giving him a total of 15 goals in the competition.

Ivory Coast forward Doumbia, perhaps the least well-known person on this list, is a past Africa Cup of Nations champion (he won it in 2015). Like Aboubakar, he has proven he can compete against Europe’s best defenders.

6. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Auba  hasn’t played in the Champions League since his time with Borussia Dortmund. During his stay with the club, Arsenal has routinely failed to qualify for the competition, tying him with Doumbia on 15 goals.

He’s still on the waiting list to return to the UCL at Barcelona, but the Catalan giants have regained their spark. Next season, Aubameyang might add to his record in La Liga.

5. Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez joined Manchester City in July 2018 from Leicester City. He is an Algeria

international but was born in Sarcelles, France

Mahrez has played in Europe’s top club competitions with Leicester City and Manchester City and is still in contention to add to his tally of 16 goals this season.

While he has three Premier League crowns and an Afcon title, Mahrez and Pep Guardiola’s City have yet to win the Champions League.

Sadio Mané is a Senegalese footballer who now plays as a winger for Liverpool in the Premier League and the Senegalese national team.

 Mané was fourth in the 2019 Ballon d’Or category, while he was fifth in the Best FIFA Men’s Player voting in 2019 and fourth in 2020.

Mane has 22 goals, 13 of which have come in the knockout stages, equaling Lionel Messi’s total since the 2017-18 season.

The forward has played a crucial role in two Liverpool final appearances, most notably against Bayern Munich away in 2019, and was a UCL winner later that year.

3. Samuel Eto’o

 Samuel Eto’o is the current head of the Cameroonian Football Federation, taking office on December 11, 2021.

Eto’o was regarded as one of the best strikers in the world during his time, and he is recognized as one of the greatest African players of all time, earning the African Player of the Year award a record four times.

The fomer Internazionale striker has won the Champions League three times, is the most successful African player in the competition’s history, with 33 goals.

Eto’o was a two-time winner with Barcelona, scoring in the finals in 2006 and 2009. After going to Italy, he went on to win with Internazionale.

2. Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is an Egyptian professional footballer who captains the Egypt national team and plays as a forward for Premier League club Liverpool. He is regarded as one of the top players on the planet.

In a Champions League final, Mohamed Salah scored when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the final 2019.

It was an excellent consolation for Egypt forward, whose final season in 2018 was cut short by Sergio Ramos’ grief.

Expect the Pharaoh’s superstar, who now has 36 goals, to add a few more before the season is out.

1. Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba is an Ivorian striker who retired from professional football.

He is best renowned for his career with Chelsea, where he scored more goals than any other foreign player and is currently the club’s fourth all-time goal scorer.

Drogba was praised for his 2012 Champions League final performance when he scored a late equalizer, and the game-winning penalty as Chelsea upset Bayern Munich in their home backyard.

The striker not only made an impact in the Blues’ most historic match. But he also established his consistency in the competition, scoring 44 goals for Chelsea, Olympique de Marseille, and Galatasaray during his time in the league.
