Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford has been described as being ‘hopeful’ he will be ready in time to face Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday after coming out of the Champions League battle with Atalanta with a knock.

Rashford who is coming from a shoulder surgery that delayed his start of the season has scored twice in two appearances for United since returning to action. But after kickstarting Wednesday night’s Champions League comeback against Atalanta, the 23-year-old was taken off with a minor knock.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labeled it a ‘dead leg’ after the final whistle but didn’t appear too concerned and spoke with optimism about Rashford’s availability for the weekend.

“I hope so and I think so. It was a dead leg and sometimes it can take longer than what you want. But if we treat it well, he should be okay,” the United boss said at the time.

The update on Rashford’s knock has now come out and the Daily Mail reports that Rashford underwent treatment at United’s Carrington training base on Thursday morning. As a result of that, the player is said to be optimistic that he will be passed fit in time for Sunday afternoon’s clash.

Solskjaer recently ignited some controversy over Rashford when he suggested the player, who has been awarded an MBE and honorary doctorate for his off-field work fighting UK child poverty, should now begin to ‘prioritize’ football.

“Marcus has done some remarkable and fantastic things. But now he maybe needs to prioritize his football. Marcus knows that we want a lot from him, but we are going to give him the time to get back to what he was and what he can be,” Solskjaer commented last week.

Reports later suggested that Rashford’s camp was left unhappy and disappointed by such a statement. That then prompted Solskjaer to clarify what he had meant.

“Just to get the elephant out of the room straight away, you know the headline which came before the Leicester game,” he said. “We are so unbelievably proud of what Marcus Rashford has done on and off the pitch. [The media] made a headline off one little comment.”

Manchester United will welcome Liverpool at Old Trafford in what will be a crucial match for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s era after the recent public outcry by Manchester United fans asking for the sacking of Ole Gunnar by the board of the club.

The Red Devils are yet to keep a clean sheet in eleven attempts and have been forced to come from behind to win a match on several occasions including the recent one against Atalanta in what many see as a tactical failure on Ole’s camp. Despite starting the season on a high note, Manchester United have fallen and are now sitting in the sixth position with 14 points, five behind leaders Chelsea, they are also winless in three Premier League matches, losing to Aston Villa and Leicester and drawing with Everton in between the two losses.
