Paul Pogba took Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table as they recorded a 1 0 win over Burnley.

Pogba found the back of the net in the 71st minute when his shot deflected through Nick Pope’s legs off Matthew Lowton.

Captain Harry Maguire had given United the lead in the first half but his goal was ruled out by Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR).

After an impressive performance in the second half, their determination was rewarded and they left the Turf Moor with three points.

United also left their opponent’s turf having kept their first away clean sheet of the season in the domestic league title, having conceded 11 goals in their last seven matches.

Frenchman Pogba was delighted with the win and said he is “always happy” when he is winning.

His performance for the Red Devils was crucial to silence the criticism over his future at Old Trafford and to show what a world-class player he is.

“I’m happy we are playing well and happy we are at the top, but there is a long way to go and we have big games coming up,” he added.

United manager Ole Gunnar Sokljaer heaped praised on the 27-year-old midfielder who has been sensational for the club in recent weeks.

“I’ve always said Paul is a big, big player for us,” said Solskjaer. “He is a good character in the dressing room, he is always one the lads look to (because) he’s a world champion.

“We are seeing the best of Paul at the moment. He’s getting better and better every game.”

Pogba has been linked with a move away from England with both Real Madrid and Juventus expressing their interest in the France World Cup winner.

His agent Mino Raiola has confirmed his playing days at Old Trafford are coming to an end and has not ruled out any exit from the club Pogba re-signed in 2016.

Manchester United now lead Premier League champions Liverpool with the exact number of matches played (17) but three points ahead.

Both will clash on Sunday to perhaps determine the real title contender in the 2020/2021 English campaign.

Liverpool have had mixed performances owing to the defensive crisis which Solkjaer’s men can exploit when they meet.
