The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) on Thursday cancelled the remainder of its domestic football season due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The decision to annul the 2019/2020 football season was unanimously taken by the Premier League Board (PLB) in consultation with the SLFA at a meeting held on Wednesday in Freetown, with representatives of all 14 Premier League clubs.
The meeting resolved to cancel the entire season with no champions declared, and with the same teams for next season.
The league was suspended in March following a directive from the Government Health Agencies when Covid-19 was declared a pandemic.
To date, Sierra Leone have recorded 1678 Covid-19 infections, with 1213 recoveries and 64 deaths.
Fellow West African nation Nigeria on Wednesday, cancelled the remainder of its domestic football season due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
All football activities including the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) had been put on hold since March in order to comply with government laid-down protocols to stem the spread of the virus in the West African country.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in a release said the decision to end the season was taken after due consultations with relevant authorities and “a holistic consideration of all the issues affecting the leagues (including the status of the leagues before the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic), the impact of the pandemic-induced disruptions, the health, safety and movement restrictive measures in the country.
“The potential protocols for football resumption, the costs, the financial status of the leagues and clubs, Caf [Confederation of African Football] calendar and resolutions of the various leagues as conveyed to the NFF”.
