The Confederation of African Football (Caf) and the Egyptian government on Monday announced an agreement to keep the African footballing body headquarters in Cairo for the next 10 years.
“Under this agreement CAF shall benefit from several advantages, immunities, and privileges similar to those granted to international organizations and diplomatic missions. The agreement is for a period of 10 years and shall be automatically renewed,” said Caf in a statement.
“Composed of 24 articles, the agreement seeks to facilitate Caf’s mission to develop, promote and improve the popularity of football in the African continent in accordance with the CaF statutes,” Caf added.
The agreement was signed by Caf president Ahmad Ahmad and Egyptian Sports and Youth minister Ashraf Sobhi on February 12.
“Today is a great day for African football, said Ahmad.
“Finally, we have come to the end of a long journey that will shape the future of African football. Egypt has always been home to CaF and we are proud to formalize another extension of the Headquarters Agreement.
“Personally, I express my gratitude to the Egyptian Authorities led by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for the commitment towards making the agreement a reality.”
Egyptian football has been suspended since March when the novel coronavirus was declared a pandemic. There have been 35 444 Covid-19 infections in the country, with 10 618 recoveries and 1271 deaths. Currently, Egypt has the highest death toll from Covid-19 in Africa. Egypt reported its first case of Covid-19 on February 15.
