Without any races or group training sessions on the horizon, Kenyan 400m sprinter Alex Sampao – like many athletes – has a lot more spare time on his hands.

The 2013 world Under-18 bronze medallist has taken to planting trees on his family land and has set himself the target of planting 3000 in the coming weeks.

“For now I am just at home planting trees in my farm, and nursing my dad who was involved in a road accident three weeks ago,” said Sampao. “It is high time that I now focus on planting trees to make our farm green again. That is the only way I can ensure that my time is well spent, otherwise, boredom will get the better of me.”

If and when COVID-19 is eradicated, Sampao said he would like to attempt to qualify for the 2021 Olympics in both the 400m and 800m.

“When it’s back to business, I will be there in 800m, that is our plan. But right now I am just at home with no plans this year with the shutdown. I am indoors trying to ensure that keep healthy,” said Sampao.

“In the last two years, I have been running well in the two races but I have been in preparation for 800m mostly. 800m is more commercial and easy to compete in than 400m for us Kenyans.”

In his first attempt in an 800m race, Sampao clocked an impressive 1:46 in 2018.

“I had advice from many coaches, in the aspect of posture, running style and physique. I got it right after my first 800race and I liked it.”
