SA teen sensation Montsi receives wild card at Potch Open - Sports Leo

South African teen sensation Kholo Montsi leads the main draw wild cards at the inaugural Potch Open, an ATP Challenger 50 starting on Monday at the North-West University Potchefstroom Campus.

Montsi is joined by fellow South Africans Vaughn Hunter – the 2019 SA Spring Open quarterfinalist and 19-year-old Gerhardt Becker.

The reigning African Under-18 singles and doubles champion and current ITF world number 13 junior Montsi will make an appearance in his first-ever ATP Challenger event. The 17-year-old will arrive in Potchefstroom fresh from Bosnia and Herzegovina where he was part of the South African Davis Cup squad.

“I’m very fortunate to receive a wildcard for my first challenger in my home country. It’s a special feeling for me and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to working with my coaches and making the best of this opportunity,” commented Montsi.

It has been a great year for the Eastern Cape born star who earlier in 2020 was included as part of the SA team participating at the inaugural ATP Cup in Australia.

Qualifying wild cards were awarded to South Africans Carl Roothman, Pierre Malan, Chrisjan van Wyk, as well as Robbie Arends.

The inaugural Potch Open run concurrently with week 2 of the Ilana Kloss International (Women’s ITF World Tour event) from Tuesday to Sunday.
