Hosts South Africa were thumped by seven wickets by Afghanistan in their opening Under-19 Cricket World Cup match, in Kimberley, on Friday.

It was a poor showing first up from the Lawrence Mahatlane-coached SA team, as his side were bowled out for 129 having won the toss.

SA skipper and opener Bryce Parsons top-scored with 40, with Gerald Coetzee contributing 38 down the order.

The innings belonged to Afghan spinner Shafiqullah Ghafari who completely bamboozled the SA lineup taking an incredible 6/15 in 9.1 overs.

Afghanistan made light work of the chase with Ibrahim Zadran (52) and Imran Mir (57) scoring the bulk of the runs, as they achieved their target in 25 overs.
