BVB extend Lucien Favre contract - Sports Leo

Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund announced the club’s head coach Lucien Favre has extended his contract by a year.

The 61-year-old’s contract was due to end in June 2020. However, following his impressive results at Signal Iduna Park, the board has repaid his efforts by a contract extension keeping him through 2021.

BVB’s sporting director revealed via the club’s website: “Lucien has created clear structures and developed our players. “

Indeed, Favre, a former OGC Nice manager has nurtured young talents with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Manuel Akanji playing crucial roles in the team.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke added: “He has met our expectations 100 per cent. It is logical that we want to shape the future together.”

The Swiss manager took charge of Dortmund at the start of last season and led the club to a second-place finish behind title winners Bayern Munich in his first season.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach coach said, “I am looking forward to continuing my constructive and successful cooperation with the entire BVB team.”

In the new Bundesliga season, the former playmaker for various Swiss and French clubs will not only look at pushing for a domestic silverware to restore the club’s glory but proceed further in the Champions League.

Last season, they were knocked out of the competition by Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspurs at the round of 16, crashing out 4 -0 on aggregate.
