Senegal were far too strong for Tahiti who suffered a 3-0 defeat in the opening match of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup at the Lublin Stadium, Poland, on Thursday evening.

In fact, the fans had hardly sat settled down when after 9.6 seconds Amadou Sagna scored for Senegal, and then went on to score a hattrick in what was a dream start to the tournament for the Africans.

“It’s a huge honour and it makes me very happy to have scored the fastest goal and to have broken the record,” said Sagna.

“Scoring three goals is also very special, but I can’t accept all the plaudits because we worked brilliantly as a team.”

The Young Lions of Teranga were on their game from the off, piling on the pressure and seizing control with a 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes.

Sagna wasn’t done turning heads after the first minute, either.

The 19-year-old scored one final time in the 50th minute to secure all three points and a perfect start for the Africans.

Senegal will next face Colombia on Sunday.
