Thomas Tuchel takes over from Southgate as England manager

Thomas Tuchel, 51, has been appointed by the Football Association (FA) as new manager of the England men’s national team. German Tuchel has been the talk of town for the past few days after reports emerged that he was the favourite to replace former manager Gareth Southgate.

Southgate resigned 92 days ago after leading England to a successive UEFA European Championship final, which unfortunately ended in defeat. The Three Lions lost to Italy in the 2020 final played at Wembley Stadium before being humbled by Spain in this year’s final in Germany.

The England national team has been under the guidance of interim head coach Lee Carsley, who will still be in charge during the remaining UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Republic of Ireland. Carsley will return to his role with the U21s afterwards and officially make way for Tuchel.

According to The FA, the German boss has signed a three-year deal and will be assisted by Anthony Barry. He will officially begin his duty in January 2025 . Tuchel, who has made a return to English football for a second time after a successful stint with Chelsea Football Club, is only the third non-British manager to lead England men’s senior team.

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.” Thomas Tuchel said after being confirmed as new England manager, as per The FA.

Thomas Tuchel Career Path

To start with, Tuchel was born in Krumbach, Bavaria, Germany, on 29 August 1973. His journey in football started at the academy of TSV Krumbach, where he was coached by his father Rudolf. He later moved to FC Augsburg where he spent several years but despite showing great potential was released at the age of 19.

From there, his playing career went downwards as he joined German second tier club Stuttgart Kickers before dropping to the fourth division where he played for SSV Ulm.

Unfortunately, Tuchel suffered a serious knee cartilage injury at the age of 25 which forced him to end his playing career. The German would then switch to coaching and began his new role at Ulm. Outside football, he worked in a cocktail bar and continued with his education in college where he pursued a degree in business.

In 2000, Tuchel was hired by Ralf Rangnick as a youth team coach at VfB Stuttgart. He helped in the development of some of Germany’s top footballers such as Mario Gomez at the club.

Tuchel would then join Bundesliga club Mainz 05 where he showed his prowess in coaching by helping the youth side win the Under-19 league title. As a result, he received promotion to the senior team and led them to European football two out of five seasons. He would then take a one-year break from football.

During the summer of 2015, Thomas Tuchel was hired by Borussia Dortmund to replace Jurgen Klopp who had signed with Premier League giants Liverpool. The German led Dortmund to DFB-Pokal triumph in 2017 before later signing with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

After winning two successive league titles among other trophies with the Parisians, Tuchel continued with his coaching career at Chelsea where he replaced manager Frank Lampard. He stunned the football world as he led the Blues to triumph in the UEFA Champions League in his debut season.

Tuchel then joined Bayern Munich in 2023 but left at the end of last season after the Bavarians failed to win a league title in twelve years.

Considering the experience the German has garnered managing some of Europe’s finest clubs, England fans could be hopeful of a title triumph in the coming years.
