Andrey Rublev anger without a doubt makes him the angriest tennis player in the ATP Tour 2024. His is a history of repeated anger cycles which are now getting out of hand.

Just like in the last two seasons, Rublev started the season with no hang on his temper. The biggest irony in his life is that he always regrets his actions when it is too late. Is there a possibility he will change? It’s hard to tell for a man with anger relapses like him.

WHAT IS THE TEMPERAMENT OF RUBLEV?

Andrey Rublev anger is choleric. Choleric people are assertive, decisive, and goal-oriented. While they have the trait of being natural leaders, they are impatient with inefficiency or idleness. They can be short-tempered and have a strong drive to succeed. All of these traits describe Rublev whose meltdowns are always as a result of defeat in his tennis matches.

The Russian with a one-handed backhand to match, is known for his aggressive baseline game and laser focus. But beneath that steely exterior lies a temper that occasionally boils over.  While praised for his talent, Rublev has in the recent past grabbed attention for on-court meltdowns. 2024 Dubai Tennis Championship

Andrey Rublev anger at the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championship earned him a disqualification from the ATP 500 event. The disqualification came from his semi-final match against Alexander Bublik over unsportsmanlike conduct. He screamed at a line judge after a disputed call. Rublev was upset with a call made by the line judge during a critical point in the third set.

He reacted by yelling in the judge’s face, which the chair umpire deemed a violation of sportsmanship rules. There were other accusations that Rublev used an obscene word while yelling.  He denied this, but the chair umpire upheld the disqualification. He forfeited the match, lost ranking points and prize money he had earned throughout the tournament.

In the midst of a 2023 ATP Finals loss against Carlos Alcaraz in Turin, Italy Andrey Rublev anger showed once again. He lost his cool and slammed his racket viciously into his leg. Some onlookers advised him to get assistance in controlling his rage.

Nick Kyrgios who has struggled for years with anger issues suggested that the Russian tennis player to seek help from an anger psychologist. The world No. 5 welcomed Krgios’ suggestion saying he felt embarrassed to watch himself losing it on the court.

“For me, it is tough to see those things as well, but everyone fails sometimes. That was my week when I couldn’t manage my emotions and I couldn’t manage the stress that I was having,” he said.

“I saw that Nick (Kyrgios) offered to help and that made me smile. Nick is a very talented player, one of the most talented players in tennis, so I can say we need him back because he brings a lot of fun to tennis.”

3. 2022 French Open

Andrey Rublev lost control of his temper, hitting a ball with such rage that he just missed hitting a court-sweeper during a French Open tantrum. The Russian was playing Kwon Soon-woo on Court 14 in Paris, and he was losing the match after dropping the first tie-break on the red dirt.

Following his confrontation with the umpire, Rublev swung a ball out of his pocket, sending it soaring into his chair and bouncing back onto the court with great force. Luckily for the 26-year-old, the ball sailed barely past the head of a nearby court sweeper, who made an awkward gesturing motion with his cap falling off in shock.

The supporters’ disbelief and indignation were evident. Rublev had a day with unending choruses of jeers. In response, he became even more enraged and threw a bottle on the floor, breaking it and leaking water onto the court. He was heckled by the fans for his behaviour as he continued to yell at the umpire and was given a code violation and warning right away for the event.

WHAT IS RUBLEV’S PROBLEM?

Rublev’s biggest problem is in his anger management. He still has a lot to do in getting his temper in check. He still has meltdowns in 2024 and it is nothing new because he acts the same way when angry from two years ago. However, Rublev admits that he has a problem which he is working on resolving. Will he see a therapist as earlier suggested by Kyrgios? Time will tell it all.
