Boxing Day 1963 is considered one of the craziest days in football’s history. Whereas fans were expecting a return to normalcy after Christmas Day celebrations, the old English First Division had other ideas. In total, a record 66 goals were scored across 10 matches on that day alone.

Fulham humiliated Ipswich 10-2, Blackburn thumped West Ham 8-2, Manchester United were beaten 5-1 by Burnley, and Liverpool secured a 5-1 win over Stoke. Chelsea thrashed Blackpool 5-1 and Sheffield Wednesday beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0. In other fixtures, West Brom and Tottenham Hotspur drew 4-4, Wolves and Aston Villa drew 3-3, and Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United also drew 3-3.

In the lowest-scoring game of the day, Leicester City beat Everton 2-0. Six players claimed hat-tricks and four men were sent off on that day.

Team With The Best Boxing Day Record

Despite having a difficult time since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United still have the best record of any side on Boxing Day in the Premier League era. The Red Devils have played 27 matches on this day, winning 21 times and suffering defeats in just two games.

In those matches, United have scored 71 goals and conceded just 27. They have accumulated 67 points at an average of 2.48 per game, which is very impressive. Today, Erik ten Hag’s men will be facing Aston Villa, who have not been so impressive on Boxing Day. Villa have won just five of their 25 assignments on Boxing Day.

Arsenal have the second-best Boxing Day record of any in Premier League history. The Gunners have won 16 of their 25 matches and lost just twice. They have been held draw seven times. Today, Mikel Arteta’s side will be facing West Ham, who have recorded seven wins, draws and defeats in 21 games.
