Brentford beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening to record their third Premier League win of the season. The hosts became the first-ever team in the Premier League era to win on their first three visits to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated the game, recording 17 shots compared to Brentford’s seven. A disappointing defeat means the Blues have now only won one of their last 13 Premier League home matches and are eleventh on the standings. On the other hand, Brentford have jumped into the top half of the table after recording back-to-back victories and ending their six-match winless run in the Premier League.

Speaking after the loss to Brentford, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said his team takes the blame for the poor performance.

“The analysis is clear. In the first half, we should score and we didn’t score. We dominated, created chances and the opponent didn’t cross the halfway line. We need to blame ourselves because we were not nasty or clinical. In the second half, we cannot concede these types of goals and this is our mistake.”Sky Sports quotes manager Mauricio Pochettino, who joined Chelsea several months ago.

Chelsea have lost their eighth Premier League home match in 2023 (W3 D7), their most home league defeats in a calendar year since 1986 (10).

How Brentford Beat Chelsea

This was a big game for Chelsea as they had the chance to end their neighbour’s dominance at Stamford Bridge and also continue the momentum they have recently been building. The Blues had picked seven points up from the last three games.

Chelsea started the match well, dominating the proceedings and even came close to opening the scoring in the tenth minute. Unfortunately, Noni Madueke’s curling effort hit the crossbar.

Summer signing Cole Palmer was pulling the strings as an attacking midfielder. He created an opportunity for Marc Cucurella but the Spain international who is yet to score for the Blues since his arrival from Brighton saw his effort comfortably saved by Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

Palmer again set up Raheem Sterling but the former Manchester City winger skewed his effort over. Brentford got their first big chance towards the end of the first half but Bryan Mbuemo’s was denied by Robert Sanchez.

Brentford eventually took the lead after 58 minutes of play when Ethan Pinnock headed into the back of the net. This was after Mbuemo crossed the ball into the danger area.

Brentford nearly doubled their lead later on but Sanchez did well to deny Mbuemo. However, there was little the Spanish goalkeeper could do in the dying minutes of the game when Mbuemo tapped into an empty net. The Cameroonian forward has been directly involved in five Premier League goals (two goals, three assists) against Chelsea.
