He finished ahead of Benjamin Kien from Kenya who finished second with a silver medal and Lamecha Girma from Ethiopia who finished third with a bronze medal.

Born and brought up in Fez, Morocco, the athlete began his studies in Fez and later joined the Mohammed VI National Institute of Sport in Rabat, Morocco.

Career

Soufiane is a Moroccan steeplechaser who is considered to be one of the best in the world. He is the 2020 Olympic champion in the 3000 meters steeplechase and he competed in the 2023  World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary where he won a gold medal, becoming the first Moroccan to win the event at the World Championships.

El Bakkali started his career at a very young age making his international debut in the 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics where he finished fourth. He then made his senior debut the same year at the African Championships in Athletics where he finished tenth.

Two years later, he finished fourth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and won a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships in London.

Two years later, he won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. 2020 was his best year as he won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and he became the first Moroccan to win an Olympic gold medal in the 3000 meters steeplechase.

His latest competition was in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary where he won a gold medal. Here are some of his achievements in athletics:
