Personal Life
Obi was born in Jos, Nigeria on April 22nd 1987 to his parents of Nigerian descent, Mr. John Michael Nchekube Obinna and Mrs. Irosu Obi. His father is a retired civil servant and his mother was a business lady.
He was born into a family of three boys, his brother Tochukwu Patrick Obi is also a professional football player for Super Eagles.
The footballer schooled at Jos Metropolis Township Primary School and here, his talent was realized when playing on the field.
At twelve years, he was selected to play in Pepsi Football Academy, a team that travelled across Nigeria seeking young and talented footballers who would play professionally.
Mikel played for Plateau United club in his hometown and was fortunate to have been part of the Under-17 Championship held in Finland.
His original name happens to be Michael but the Nigerian Football Association misspelt it to ‘Mikel’ when submitting his documents for the FIFA U-17 World Championships tournament held in Finland.

Obi was okay with that and since then, he adopted the new name.
His family has strong Christian values which they observe making him a Christian believer. Obi is married to a Russian model known as Olga Dyachenko and is blessed with two twin daughters, Mia and Ava.
Career
Obi began his career journey when he was selected by Pepsi Football Academy then to Plateau United where he played for the Under-17 side in Finland.
After the tournament in Finland, he was on trial at South African club Ajax Cape Town, ultimately joining Club Lyn Football in Norway.
At 18 years, Manchester United and Chelsea had already set their eyes on the young champion, not forgetting that Lyn was also interested in him.
On unclear circumstances, Mikel was made to sign a contract with Manchester United which was done in a hastily arranged press conference. Later, Mikel received threatening calls from unknown people which was a rivalry between the three clubs. He was assigned a security guard.
However, he was abducted while watching a game from the stands in which United pointed fingers at Chelsea. It was later realized that his agent took off with him to London. This brought up some rivalry amongst the three clubs, but Mikel was sent back to Lyn on FIFA’s involvement.
He joined Club Chelsea from Lyn, taking a term of 11 years while playing for the club.
After that, he was signed by a Chinese club Tianjin TEDA on a free transfer for two years.
On completion of his contract at Tianjin, Mikel joined Middlesbrough on a short-term deal and then to Trabzonspor on a two-year contract, with an option of a further year.
He left the club on a mutual agreement joining Stoke City on a one-year contract. Mikel cancelled his contract with Stoke moving to Kuwait SC unfortunately, his contract was terminated after four months, and he announced his retirement upon this.
