  • However, two defensive errors and another goal sealed the fate for Manchester United as Sevilla eased their way into the semi-final

Manchester United were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League after a 3-0 defeat in the away leg of their quarter-final against Sevilla.

After two late own goals at Old Trafford, the match at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Thursday began with the score tied at 2-2.

United were eliminated following another desperate defensive effort, with Youssef En-Nesyri scoring twice after errors from Harry Maguire and David de Gea.

Loic Bade also scored as Sevilla advanced with a 5-2 aggregate victory, with Juventus up next in the semi-finals.

United started quickly at home last week, but they contributed to their own early demise this time, as Sevilla got through in the eighth minute.

De Gea played the ball into Maguire, who was swiftly besieged by three attackers in the penalty box and had his attempted pass rejected by Erik Lamela before En-Nesyri easily tapped home.

Sevilla were the more dangerous side, and the VAR saved United five minutes before halftime when Marcos Acuna strayed offside before Lucas Ocampos superbly shot past De Gea.

At the opening of the second half, Ivan Rakitic’s corner looped up off Bade’s shoulder and over De Gea, providing only a brief reprieve.

Ocampos failed to score a third goal in a goalmouth scramble, allowing United to attempt their own two-goal comeback, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen both going close.

Any United comeback aspirations were dashed nine minutes from time when De Gea sprinted out of his box and failed to make clean touch with a clearing, allowing En-Nesyri to curl his shot around the helpless goalkeeper.
