Benavidez had four chances at winning a UFC title. His first chance was against Demetrious Johnson for the inaugural UFC Flyweight Championship on September 22, 2012. He lost via split decision.
His second chance came on December 14, 2013, when he had a rematch with Demetrious Johnson. Once again, he lost.
On February 29, 2020, Joseph Benavidez faced Deiveson Figueiredo for the vacant UFC flyweight Championship. Deiveson missed the weight and became ineligible to win the title despite defeating Benavidez by TKO in the second round.
They had a rematch for the championship five months later at UFC Fight Night 172. Benavidez lost the fight via technical submission in the first round.
Despite failing to capture a UFC title, Joseph Benavidez has been a winner in other fights.
